How Do The Golf Pros Train?

Many of the top touring professionals know that winning on the tour today takes much more than a great game of golf. It means understanding every aspect of their physical and mental being and what factors influence their performance.

Before any golfer, pro or otherwise, picks up a club, they look at the capability of their body versus the requirements of the swing.

What exactly does this mean?

Most of us are aware that golf requires rotation at the hip joints, shoulder joints and spine. So, what if a golfer has a very tight low back or any restrictions in their shoulders? Well, the obvious answer is that any loss of range of motion creates swing flaws in addition to injuries. This is a fact based on human performance and movement. It is also necessary to create a fluid and natural golf swing. Not only does golf require good rotation at each joint, but it must be efficient and explosive.

Last fall I had the opportunity to visit such a human performance center where some of the more famous tour players train. I was able to explore the same tests they take as part of their initial assessment period. Remember since we are all built differently and have different strengths and weaknesses, we all test differently.

The results of these tests help guide, direct and prioritize any training program moving forward. How successful is

this approach to golf conditioning? I watched it place a green jacket on a well deserving young player just a couple of years ago.

What exactly do you test for?

Muscle strength. Evaluate each significant muscle group. Are there any significant differences between your left side and your right side?

Range of Motion. Do you have adequate range of motion in the joints which most affect the golf swing? How does your lower body look versus your upper body? Does your left side match the flexibility in your right?

Core strength and endurance. Do you know how to properly engage your core region? If so, for how long?

Aerobic capacity and endurance. Do you have what it takes to last through a solid 18 holes? Is there an opportunity for improvement?

Balance. Do you have proper balance? Do you know what normal balance for golf looks like?

Physical assessment tests similar are commonly used by the top touring pros today. These tests are being offered at some of the top golf performance centers and will surely be the wave of the future. It is your true understanding of your relative strengths and weaknesses that creates opportunities for immediate and sound improvement in your game.

Catch Your Limit With These Fishing Supplies

Great fishing supplies are an essential when it comes to netting the big game out at the lake or the stream. You can’t expect the fish to bite, though, if you don’t bring your A game. And a big part of a top-notch game is the right gear–from rods and reels, to lines, lures, and tackle boxes.

On the other hand, even some weekend warrior with the most advanced, most pricey equipment won’t last very long on the lake if he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Them fish can practically smell inexperience, and they’ll walk all over you–or swim, in their case–if you can’t fish worth a darn.

That’s where practice comes in. Get in a few hours of fishing whenever you, wherever you. No matter if it’s off a dock on the bay or thigh-high in high tide in the Atlantic, cast away whenever you can find the time.

Just like any athletic pursuit or hobby, practice combined with the best fishing supplies makes for perfect angling.

Try to learn as much about fishing as you can,

too. Instead of running off on your own, try to fish with buddies who’s fishing skills you envy. Or hunker down near a few total strangers and pick their brain while you’re all casting and reeling.

Finally, observe yourself. You don’t have to take notes like a hook worm. But keep track in your mind what kind of lure you’re using at all times, what kind of natural conditions you’re working with, and what kind of fish you’re catching, or not catching.

You will start to see the tendencies of your prey, along with your own tendencies. Fishing, you see, is much more than just about waiting and drinking beer. You also need practice, a sharp mind for it, and the right fishing supplies.

What To Expect When You Least Expect It

The time you will be attacked you will most likely be:

Distracted

Out numbered

Alone

There will be no back up

You will be in the fight of your life.

Specific Defenses don’t work.

1. Nothing you do will work. Last night one of the guys who train with me is a Port Authority police officer. We were discussing the merits of Pepper Spray. The common misconception is that the pepper spray will end the assault. As you may or may not know, a lot of emotionally disturbed persons (EDP) will just walk off the pepper spray. Most times, it only serves to enrage them further. Now what? Should you throw out your pepper spray? Of course not! Don’t expect the pepper spray to end the fight. DO expect the pepper spray to afford you an opening to inflict greater damage or escape. Even if the spray simply causes your target to blink, it’s done its job. All it has to do is create an opening, a little hesitation in your assailant’s plan of attack; just enough to let you seize the opportunity, gain the advantage or escape.

When you train in hand to hand, always train with multiple, lethal strikes. Don’t depend on every technique you throw to hit its intended target or end the fight. You will miss a lot more than you hit. That’s why you train with OVER KILL. You should go about two or three steps past what you would normally perceive as the “end” of the fight. Remember, it’s better to be pleasantly surprised that gravely disappointed.

2. You will not feel how you feel right now. In fact, your body and mind will due a wide variety of things to help you deal with the hormone induced stress. Tunnel vision, audio exclusion (you won’t hear everything), slow motion perception, loss of finite motor skills and your reasoning skills will disappear. Don’t think of this a problem. Understand that your body is preparing its self for battle. The same as it has done since Kane killed Abel.

3. You will act with single purpose. Think about the time(s) you locked your keys in your car. How many times did you try the handle? Even when you knew it was locked. Heck, we press an elevator button repeatedly when we are impatient. Imagine if your life depended on it! Simple effective methods are tailor made to enable you to operate with in this specific behavior. When you study a martial art, the feeling is “The more moves, the better” Sort of a more bang for the buck. Don’t be concerned with what, just how effective.

4. You will be in the worst place imaginable. Your home, the parking garage; chances are you will be distracted. That is, if your assailant is doing his job. The terrain will be cluttered and covered with “body unfriendly” objects like bottles, concrete and asphalt.

5. You will be distracted. There is no doubt that the more aware you are, the less likely you will be assaulted. Expect to be surprised. Even the most experienced martial artists get startled by the family cat.

6. Your assailant will have a distinct advantage. Whether it’s a weapon, accomplices or sheer size; you’re picked as a likely target because your attacker will think he has a great chance of imposing his will on you. No matter how hard you train, these reactions are hard wired into you. That’s why you need to work with in the parameters of what you will be capable of accomplishing.

Now for the good news…

You will be able to absorb a tremendous amount of damage. There are numerous reports of people being shot and stabbed multiple times, surviving the assault and even driving themselves to get help. I have seen video of a 110 pound police woman get shot 2 times, fight back and surviving to patrol another day. I have also heard first hand accounts of a 220 pound man crumble at the first sign of gun or knife play; only to be pronounced dead at the scene. Do your own research. You can begin by reading the accounts of Congressional Medal of Honor winners. All of these people have been shot and stabbed multiple times, performed amazing feats and some even SURVIVED before they died.

Take Ben Salomon for example. On July 6th and 7th, 1944, during a battle on the island of Saipan, Ben Salomon’s Army surgical tent became overrun by a Japanese infantry. According to eye witnesses, Ben shot the first one who had bayoneted a wounded American lying on a stretcher. Two more charged through the tent entrance. Ben clubbed them both with a rifle, then shot one and bayoneted the other. Four more began to crawl under the sides of the tent. He shot one, bayoneted one, stabbed another with a knife, and head butted the fourth. Next, Ben ran out of the tent to get help to defend the aid

station. He quickly realized that the situation was hopeless since the Japanese force had overwhelmed the two American battalions. Pockets of American resistance fought on inside the perimeter, but the bulk of the surviving American soldiers were being pushed back toward Tanapag village. Salomon returned to the tent and ordered his aid men to evacuate the wounded while he stayed behind to hold off the enemy and cover their withdrawal. Salomon then grabbed a rifle and fought on with the few Americans still resisting inside the perimeter. Eventually he manned a machine gun after its gunner was killed. That was the last time anyone saw Ben Salomon alive. After the battle, Ben Salomon’s body was found with 72 bullets in it. Doctors confirmed that he incurred at least 24 of the wounds BEFORE he died. Not bad for a dentist from Wisconsin.

What’s the secret, what’s the difference? What makes people like Ben Salomon continue to go forward?

ATTITUDE!

No matter who you are you will have one of to reactions. One will get you killed; the other may save your life. If your reaction is “Oh God, why is this happening to me” you will surely end up in the box. But if your reaction is “I’m taking you with me you SOB!!!” You’ve got a good chance of making it home. First, you have to assume you’re already dead and anything you do is an improvement over being dead. Don’t complicate this issue. It can’t be rationalized. Rationalization only serves denial of the truth. And Denial will get you killed.

You can use this information when you’re training. If you are doing weapons training and the knife touches you, YOU ARE NOT AUTOMATICALLY & MAGICALLY DEAD. You may be cut or shot, but you are far from dead. Remember, nobody dies in training.

But be prepared. Know that you will have to fight, even if you’re injured. Don’t stop. When you do this you will stop at the moment something doesn’t work out.

Nothing will go smoothly and it NEVER LOOKS GOOD. Save that for Hollywood. It’s a struggle. It’s Ugly and painful. You want to be as ruthless and as nasty as fast as possible. Anything less reduces your chances for success. It’s that simple. The longer you prolong the fight, the less your chances of success. Train and act as if your life depends on it, because it does.

“Non-lethal” technique or methods designed to subdue your assailant with out doing significant damage are a fantasy designed to play on your sense of compassion and fair play. If you’re a civilian being assaulted in the street or a soldier in the heat of battle, there is no place for it. The only application of non-lethal technique is in law enforcement only to be used on compliant and semi-compliant subjects. If you happen to end a situation and your target remains alive, it was his lucky day. But it was your choice to stop, not his.

Why are the methods that came out of the early 1900’s are so effective. First off, we will never have the opportunity to “test” methods like these on the scale that they have been tested. Technology has changed the way we wage war, so the instances of hand to hand combat significantly less. But make no mistake, times and technology may change but hand to hand, mano y mano will never change. Unless we grow a third arm, we are still basically the same since the first homo sapien sapien walked the earth. New training methods may appear but the opportunity to test their validity is less available than the world war I and world war II era.

A Big Fish Story

Ketchikan, located in southeast Alaska, is a good place to fish for halibut. Sally and John Balch live in Ketchikan and have a favorite spot nearby to halibut fish. It’s a secret spot, so don’t ask where it is.

The Balches were fishing there one Sunday and having good luck landing cod and halibut, so they decided to stop about mid-morning. Sally started pulling in her gear and felt a tug on the line.

It was more than a tug, really. Sally said that she thought she had snagged the bottom of the ocean. Sally reeled in the line with all her strength, tired, and turned the rod over to her husband.

John and Sally fought the halibut over the course of the next hour. They reeled it to the surface three times, but each time the halibut regained strength and swam back down to the

bottom of the ocean.

After more than an hour the tired Balches were successful in subduing the halibut, and after another hour were able to bring the halibut into their boat.

Back in Ketchikan the Balches towed their boat over to the local lumber yard where John works and used the fork lift to unload the halibut from their boat. A crowd gathered to listen to repeated tales of the adventure, and the Balches filleted the fish and gave away pieces to anyone who wanted a piece.

They had plenty. The halibut was 7 feet long and weighed 323 pounds. And Sally caught the large halibut with a bargain $39 Penn rod and reel combo.

Baitcasting Reels – Definitely Worth Learning, Pt. 2

If you want to get serious about bass fishing, it’s important that you learn to use all the tools.

The one I’m going to discuss now is the baitcasting reel. The benefits of these were discussed in Baitcasting Reels – Worth Learning, Pt. 1.

So, what is the best way to tackle these buggers? First, you’ll want to make sure it’s set up right. Let’s adjust the brakes on the system to help alleviate some bird’s nests.

Start learning the baitcasting reel with a 3/8 oz. or a 1/2 oz. weight until you get the hang of it.

Put the break at it’s highest setting, usually 10. Now, adjust the spool tension as tight as it will go (usually on the right side with no numbers). Hold the rod and reel straight out in front of you and click the line release button to allow the lure to fall straight down to the ground. Start backing off the spool tension until the lure (I use practice plugs) slowly falls to the ground, and when it hits, no more line comes off the spool. This is the correct setting.

While you are practicing (yes, you are going to need to practice with this reel), back off on the brake just a little at a time. Eventually you will get more comfortable with the new settings and you should be able to cast farther. Experiment with different settings with the brake and spool.

Don’t Overspool

While you are learning the baitcasting reel, do not overspool. Adding too much line, at least until you get used to throwing it, will cause backlash. By adding less line to the reel, less line comes off with every rotation and it’s easier to avoid backlashing, especially with mono which has a memory and will loosely coil up around the spool once tension is relieved.

Make Sure To Get The Right Combo

The lighter the lure you are casting, the shorter the rod you need for the baitcasting reel. Using too long of a rod with a light weight will result in backlash. Casting a 1/8th or 1/4 ounce plastic plug will result in little if any load up on the rod tip from midway up with a

7 foot rod and the bird’s nests are inevitable.

Also, the 7 foot rod is not meant for casting. It is meant for lobbing 2 handed as in the Carolina rig or for underhanded pitching as in 1/2 ounce and up jigs. Get a 6 foot medium heavy or a 6 foot 6 inch medium heavy rod and then try 2 handed casting. You will have much more control over the spool as you feather it with your thumb.

Thumbs Up – Or Down

The whole trick to using the baitcasting reel is the use of the thumb. Applying and releasing pressure to the spool with your thumb is the key to this system, and you must master it.

Here it is in a nutshell: put the thumb on the line to hold it in place while you click the line release button. Cast the lure by releasing the thumb pressure, but keep the thumb barely touching the line. As the lure reaches its destination, apply more pressure with the thumb as a brake and to keep the line from spooling off into a bird’s nest.

Easier said than done. It takes a lot of practice to get the right touch.

Again, when you cast keep your thumb on lightly on the spool. A brief touch of more pressure at the beginning of the cast and less as it goes out. Keep practicing until you can cast over and over without a bird’s nest and then start easing off the tension knob and the brake.

Don’t try to be a hero. Throwing too hard will snag you up. Throw a moderate distance until you get used to it. As you get better at this, you will see your distance improve.

Doesn’t everyone want to feel appreciated, popular, and get some recognition? Children need it even more that you do. This is why a child, who has leadership, success, and social skills, will go far among his or her peers. This is one more reason why a child who studies Karate will avoid following the crowd and become a trend setter.

How can a child be so self assured? It comes with inner confidence, achievements, and enhanced athletic abilities. These are all benefits that children gain from regular participation in a Karate class.

Innovation and Creative Thinking

When teaching the children, in our North Providence martial arts studio, I often emphasize the value of the words, “martial artist.” It is the art that really separates a martial artist from the street fighter. Otherwise, children would only learn self-defense skills, which is a by product of Karate training, but they also have a moral code. Many life skills are learned within martial arts classes. Children in a Karate class should be encouraged to find solutions that work for them.

Therefore, the young Karate student is not a clone of his or her teacher. After the basics are accomplished, all Karate students should use techniques that work for their mind and body. Karate practitioners are not all “wired” in the same way.

As long as the basic foundations are followed, the child who practices Karate should find independent solutions, just like any

other artist. I often compare this to music; and here is my comparison, “I can give you the notes, and teach you songs, but it is up to you to create your own songs.”

Time Management

Children, who practice Karate, or any other martial art, learn to be dressed on time, line up in formation, and remember to bring their equipment. This is elementary to adults, but if your child is slowing you down, Karate is a fantastic solution for the child who needs to manage time a little better.

When this same child grows into adulthood, he or she will be thankful for the lessons in time management, when going through college, working at a job, or raising his or her own children. When learning Karate, children also learn to prioritize the important things in life and establish much better control over time management. The co-worker, or college student, who is habitually late, is rarely successful, and has always left something important “on the back burner.”

Before You Buy That Self Defense Product

Martial arts or other self-defense courses are great to learn, but for many people, they take too much time to learn, and can be expensive. Besides, you are not always going to have the opportunity to use your self-defense skills so you might need other ways to defend yourself. Self-defense products are one way to go.

But, before you go out and purchase a self-defense mechanism, you should consider some of the following points:

• Find out which one is best for you – Not much sense carrying around throwing stars or a set of SAP gloves if you aren’t trained in martial arts or how to throw a good punch. Learn what product is going to be right for you.

• Learn to use the self-defense product properly – Having a self-defense product and not knowing how to use it can injure you as easily as it can hurt your assailant. Once you have chosen a self-defense product, ask for proper instructions on how to use it, or take a course in using the products properly. You aren’t helping the cause if you hurt yourself before your defend yourself.

• Make sure you are legally able to carry this item – You don’t want

the embarrassment of being harassed by local law enforcement, then take the time to see if you are allowed to carry the self-defense product your have chosen. Some may need permits or other permission before you can carry them around in public.

• Don’t carry more than you need – If pepper spray is going to give you the jump you need to parry away an assailant, then there is really no need to carry air guns, slingshots or a taser. When the moment comes for you to use the self-defense product, you don’t want to have to fumble around to choose which one to use.

Self defense products can get you out of a sticky situation – there is no doubt about that. But, unless you know what you need, how to use that product, and if it is legal, you may be getting more than you’ve bargained for. You can actually do yourself more harm that good by not knowing what self-defense products are right for you.

Do your homework before you invest time and money into self-defense products. They can save your life, your money and provide you with peace of mind.

A submersible, waterproof video camera will mount to any standard camera tripod and work just as well above the water for surveillance, sport activities, wild life viewing, swimming pools, and even for security around homes and businesses.
